Solana Launches Blinks to Integrate Blockchain Transactions on Social Media and Beyond
The Solana Foundation’s latest announcement promises to integrate blockchain transactions into any platform, streamlining the web3 experience.
A new set of developer tools launched by the Solana Foundation are reinventing how blockchain activity interacts with common websites, ushering in a new era of seamless, intuitive digital experiences.
What Are Blinks & Actions?
Blinks (Blockchain Links) and Solana Actions are a creative way of simplifying blockchain processes and integrating them into a vast range of applications and services, including traditional Web 2 sites and social media platforms.
Solana Actions empowers developers to create accessible applications. Essentially, anything you can do within the Solana ecosystem can now be directly implemented into existing applications.
Previously, blockchain activity could only be executed through wallet-aware applications and sites. Through Solana Blinks, any Solana Action can be converted into a shareable link, meaning that any website can display a URL that navigates to the beginning of a transaction on the Solana blockchain.
In practice, this means that a Solana transaction can be launched from any website, social media platform, or QR code.
Users will be able to execute on-chain transactions from the comfort of familiar websites without needing to connect to external platforms to complete transactions, lowering the barrier to entry and making decentralized applications far more accessible.
Reimagining the Web3 Experience - Potential Use Cases
The implications of Solana Blinks and Actions are widespread. Chris Osborn, Founder of Web 3 messaging app Dialect, lauded the development as a bold step towards further interoperability between the worlds of Web 2 and Web 3.
"Actions and Blinks deliver on one of the internet's original promises: they make experiences portable, shareable, and actionable on any surface. From your X feed you can buy a NFT, tip a creator, receive money, vote, stake, swap and so much more." - Chris Osborn, Founder, Dialect.
Blinks and Actions are also expected to bolster the Solana Foundation’s push towards the widespread adoption of the network. Jon Wong, Head of Ecosystem Engineering at the Solana Foundation, theorizes that these tools could spearhead a new wave of adoption by making blockchain integration more user-friendly.
“Access to blockchain protocols has long been isolated to dApps and other wallet-aware tools. Now, Actions and blinks on Solana allow any website and application on the internet to be a distribution point for onchain interactions – furthering the goal of mainstream adoption… These simple-yet-powerful tools bring blockchain to everyone, everywhere by lowering the barriers to entry and paving the way for broader adoption of blockchain-based transactions.” - Jon Wong, Head of Ecosystem Engineering, Solana Foundation.
Solana Ecosystem Builds Momentum
This isn’t the first time that the Solana ecosystem has made dramatic strides that boosted its accessibility and lowered the barrier to entry.
Today’s announcement builds off the precedent set by other Solana blockchain tools. These include creative developments like Token Extensions, which greatly expand the functionality of SPL tokens, and cNFTs (compressed NFTs), which reduce the amount of data required to store data onchain, hence making cNFTs more cost-efficient.
